Convocation 9/6/17: American Ninja Warrior and FOOTBALL

Warning: This post deals with difficult topics such as sexual assault. If you are not comfortable with this topic, you may wish to avoid this post.

Today’s convo was all about American Ninja Warrior, that show you watched for 5 minutes while searching for literally anything else on TV (sorry). In case the previous sentence did not make it obvious, I do not like the show American Ninja Warrior ( I much prefer Criminal Minds). Now that we got that little unconscious bias out-of-the-way, let’s get to the meat (what little there was) of today’s convocation.

First, football. I was originally planning to write about how it was unnecessary to spend 15 minutes of convo talking about the Baylor game (we all heard about it), however the appearance of Ian McCaw trumped that. For those who don’t know, Ian McCaw, Liberty’s athletic director as of 2016, was the athletic director for Baylor during the Baylor University sexual assault scandal. During this scandal, it was alleged that the Baylor football department covered up as many as 17 sexual assaults by football players.¹ This scandal and its ensuing fallout resulted in the firing of Baylor’s head coach, the suspension of several Baylor football players, and the resignation of Ian McCaw and the university president. McCaw, who was above the football department, has said that he was unaware of any of these events occurring while he was in charge, however according to USA Today, Baylor University has claimed that he was aware of at least one incident.²

In my personal opinion, I do not believe that hiring McCaw was the right decision, however I do not make those decisions. To give credit where credit is due, he has had a positive impact on our football team. According to The Virginian Pilot, he was largely responsible for Liberty moving up the NCAA football subdivision.³

On a lighter note, the American Ninja Warrior part of convo was pretty good. The interview was cringey at times, but the speakers had great things to say. Seeing the students, faculty, and athletes run the course was one of the funnest experiences I have ever had in convo (still doesn’t beat Tim Hawkins though).

Bible Verses Quoted this convocation: 3

Bible Verses Quoted all semester: 3

Lightning Round:

  • There were 7 different videos shown in convo today. 7. I was getting whiplash from turning my head so much.
  • Who would have guessed that the first person to quote from the scripture was not Jerry, Nasser, a chaplain, Cousins, or the NASCAR guys. No, it was the island ninja. Let that sink in. Also, it took 2 weeks of convo for someone to actually quote from scripture.
  • That last guy to run the course had to be a plant, right? Regardless, that was an amazing way to end convo.
